Its use for a wide range of applications including problem processing, news, gossip, and research reflects the expansion of media production through new technologies that are accessible and affordable to the general public. All digital media technologies are included, such as question-answer databases, digital pictures and video, blogging, podcasting, mobile phone photography and videos, and wikis. In addition to these technologies, user generated content may also employ a combination of open source, free software and flexible licensing or related agreements to further reduce the barriers to collaboration, skill-building, and discovery.

Before the launch of YouTube in 2005, there were few simple methods available for ordinary computer users who wanted to post videos online. With its easy to use interface, YouTube made it possible for anyone who could use a computer to post a video that millions of people could watch within a few minutes. The wide range of topics covered by YouTube has turned video sharing into one of the most important parts of internet culture.

Flickr is an image and video hosting website as well as an online community. Social networking websites are being used regularly by millions of people, and it now seems that social networking will be an enduring part of everyday life. The main types of social networking services are those which contain directories of some categories (such as former classmates), means to connect with friends (usually with self-description pages), and recommender systems linked to trust. Popular methods now combine many of these, with MySpace and Facebook being the most widely used in North America.

By 2005, MySpace was reportedly getting more page views than Google. In 2006, Facebook opened up to the non US college community to become the largest and fastest growing site in the world, not limited by particular geographical followings.

Ning hopes to compete with large social sites like MySpace and Facebook by appealing to users who want to create networks around specific interests or have limited technical skills. The unique feature of Ning is that anyone can create their own custom social network for a particular topic or need, catering to specific audiences. Ning has been used by educators to conduct a book study on Curriculum Mapping. Many educators are using ning for developing educational resources. Features were customized so that participants could upload pictures and videos of student developed projects as well as links to blogs and Flickr.

7 Things You Should Know About Facebook

7 Things You Should Know About Ning

Social Bookmarking

What is Social Bookmarking?

Social bookmarking using websites like Delicious is a service that allows users to tag, save, manage and share web pages from a centralized source. Through email, we stay connected and share information and documents. It would be difficult to conceptualize our work without it. Yet, the internet has evolved over the past two decades from a place one visits to a place in which one interacts, offering new opportunities beyond email. Numerous web resources such as social bookmarking, social networks, RSS aggregation, blogs, and Twitter can be used to keep school board members, administrators and teachers up to date on emerging technology, teaching resources, and support networks. This session will provide an overview of Web 2.0 applications for personal learning and instructional use.

Key Questions

• How do Board members, administrators, and teachers communicate professionally and personally? More importantly, how do they share professional information?
• How is that different from how students communicate and share academically and personally?
• How could web applications be leveraged to facilitate professional and instructional collaboration, connections and communication?
